Moving house is one of life’s big milestones – but without the right preparation, it can quickly become stressful. The good news? A little effort before moving day goes a long way. Whether you’re moving across Leeds, relocating within Yorkshire, or heading further afield, packing properly can protect your belongings, save time, and make the whole process run far more smoothly.
Here are our top packing tips to help you move with confidence.
Use the Right Boxes and Pack Them Properly
The quality of your boxes matters more than you might think. Weak or worn packaging can collapse under the weight of other items, putting your belongings at risk. Always use strong, sturdy boxes or crates – especially for heavier items like books, kitchenware, or appliances.
Once packed, seal every box with strong tape on both the top and bottom. It’s a small step that makes a big difference when boxes are being lifted, stacked, and carried.
Try to pack boxes fully rather than leaving them half-empty. A box with empty space is more likely to collapse or have items shifting around in transit. Fill gaps with packing paper or soft items like tea towels to keep everything secure.
Keep the Weight Manageable
It’s tempting to fill every box to the brim to save on the number of trips – but overpacking leads to boxes that are difficult (and dangerous) to lift. As a rule, if you can’t comfortably lift a box yourself, it’s too heavy.
Distribute weight sensibly: heavier items at the bottom of the box, lighter ones on top. This keeps your boxes stable and reduces the risk of injury on moving day.
Wrap Fragile Items with Care
Anything breakable deserves extra attention. Wrap fragile items individually using bubble wrap, packing paper, or even clothing – and always make sure they’re cushioned on all sides inside the box. Label these boxes clearly as FRAGILE so they’re handled with care throughout the move.
Glassware, crockery, and ornaments are the most common casualties of a house move. Taking five extra minutes to wrap them properly can save you the disappointment of unpacking broken items at the other end.
Think About How Boxes Will Stack
When packing, it’s worth thinking about how your boxes will sit in the removal van. Flat, uniform boxes stack far more efficiently than mismatched shapes – and a well-loaded van means fewer trips.
Where possible, keep items flat and stackable. Avoid oddly-shaped bundles that can’t be secured properly. Consistent box sizes also make loading and unloading significantly quicker.
Group Similar Items Together
Pack room by room and keep similar items together. This makes unpacking at your new home much more straightforward — you’ll know exactly which boxes belong where, and you won’t be rummaging through kitchen items to find your bathroom essentials.
Label every box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs in. A quick note on the side of each box takes seconds and saves a lot of time later.
Keep Moving Day Essentials to Hand
In amongst all the packing, it’s easy to forget that you’ll need to actually function on moving day. Pack a separate “essentials” bag or box with everything you’ll want immediate access to: the kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, snacks, phone chargers, a change of clothes, and any medications.
This box should be the last thing loaded and the first thing off the van. Trust us – you’ll be glad of a brew once you arrive.
Don't Forget Clothing and Drawers
Clothing is often an afterthought when it comes to packing — but it needs careful thought, especially if you’re removing drawers from furniture for the move. Bag clothing securely before drawers are taken out to keep everything contained and protected during transit.
Vacuum storage bags are great for bulky items like duvets and winter coats, freeing up valuable box space for other things.
